Mae Stansbury, Period 5: Cardiovascular System
-
ABO + RH Blood Types
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
AB blood can have A blood, B blood, and O blood
-
-
Layers of the Heart
-
Coverings
-
-
Visceral layer: aka epicardium, on external surface of heart
-
-
Cardiac Cycle + ECG
Coordinated heartbeat is a function of the intrinsic cardiac conduction system; it is a network of noncontractile cells
-
-
-
-
-
Major Blood Vessels
-
Arteries: carry blood away from heart; oxygenated except for pulmonary circulation and umbilical vessels of fetus
-
Muscular Arteries: elastic Arteries give rise to these, distributing arteries because they deliver blood to body organs and account for most of the named artiers
Arterioles: smallest of all arteries, control flow into capillary beds via vasodilation and vasoconstriction of smooth muscle
-
Veins: carry blood toward heart; deoxygenated except for pulmonary circulation and umbilical vessels of fetus
-
-
Structure of Blood Vessel Wall: all consist of lumen, central blood-containing space surrounded by a wall; have 3 layers
-
-
-
-
-
-
Tunica Externa: outermost layer of wall; made of loose collagen fibers that protect and anchor the wall
Vital Signs
Blood flow: volume of blood flowing through vessel, organ, or entire circulation in given period
-
pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature
Taking pulse: radial (taken at wrist) is most common, but there are other pulse points
-
Disorders
-
-
-
-
Congenital Heart Disease
-
Causes: tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia, Epstein's anomaly
Symptoms: dependent on condition, cyanosis common, may be asymptomatic
Treatment: medication, surgical intervention, some may heal on their own
