Introduction plan
3) Narrowing of focus on negative symptoms of schizophrenia and symptoms of depression
VR application to the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia and treatment of depression and limit of VR assessment research to positive schizophrenia symptoms.
Need to relate the evaluation of current VR tools to acceptability and feasibility to set the scene for the project.
Need to understand why the assessment focus is predominantly with positive schizophrenia symptoms.
Try to identify more limitations of previous VR research that are relevant to the project aside from research focus for more evidence of the research gap that this project aims to fill.
Potential of the new VR system given the strengths and weaknesses of current VR approaches.
Research landscape for anxiety and depression indicates that there have been 580 VR studies on anxiety, 82 on depression and 24 on schizophrenia between 1995 and 2021. Can argue that depression and schizophrenia seem to be understudied in VR research.
Similarities and differences (overlap) between negative symptoms of psychosis and depression - difficulty in assessing and differentiating them - often does not happen in literature. Also, find information on voice sample differences of VR between psychosis and depression.
2) General description of traditional assessment measures and virtual reality
Introduce and describe what VR is and how prevalent its use is in the mental health and related fields, such as relaxation
Description of the methods used in VR, such as head-mounted displays, how they work, and examples of how they are used.
General strengths and limitations of traditional measures and VR and potential of further incorporation of VR measures into the mental health field alongside traditional measures.
Need to relate the evaluation of current VR tools to acceptability and feasibility to set the scene for the project
COVID-19 context and influence on VR field - increase in research driven by the impact of COVID-19, the need for more accessible mental health services, and new technologically sophisticated assessment tools.
Justification for using head-mounted display in own project: popular, sense of presence and user experience etc.
1) General description of schizophrenia and depression.
Links to following sections:
The impact of these symptoms on individuals and their families, such as reduced employment and emotion regulation, as well as the burden of care
Main questions: why are schizophrenia and depression a problem? Why is this research being conducted?
Prevalence and cost of schizophrenia and depression. Start with this before moving on to symptom description. Then impact
May mention comorbidities with other conditions, such as substance use and anxiety disorders
Considerations to be discussed in meeting
Thinking about mentioning the quality of previous VR research in introduction.
Whether to mention comorbidities or not in general description.
4) Project aims and objectives
