The built characteristics of Jaywick are important as the houses were built in the early 20th century and were intended to be temporary, therefore, they did not contain efficient plumbing or services. When these became permanent, the housing was low quality and the council had provided no electricity, roads or drainage which lowered the quality of life in the area and had shape the place identity as deprived and unattractive. Political characteristics also shaped the place identity as issues such as improving roads, safety, security and quality of local amnesties cannot be officially raised due to the lack of a parish council and there is no direct source of government funding; so there are few ways to improve or resolve issues.
