these aims will vary from buissness to buisness thought they all try to keep sales at a level that is satisfactory for the buisness concerned. but as the business develops the emphasis of promotion will change.

methods of promotion
price reductions these are often seen in shops in january in july to sell off the old stock that the shop no longer wants to keep this will boost sales when products that have con out of popularity (like christmas cards after christmas).
loss leaders loss leaders are another form of price reductions often used by supermarkets. A business will use one or two to the point when they will make little to no profit. the idea is that the customer will like the supermarket because of the price reductions.
competitions competitions can be used to boost sales when customers are entered into a monthly prize draw offering a variety of prizes.
free samples this is often used in cosmetics and other businesses to let the customer try the product. becuse customers may be reluctant to buy the full product they do not know as they might not like it
