Table lamp for home work analysis mind map
Functions
Main Function
The products main function is to provide a light source that is bright enough to allow the user(s) to work in a darker environments and ones that may lack the necessary amounts of natural light.
Other Potential Functions
The product could also contain some other functions besides it base function of product, to provide light.
The lamp could benefit from the addition of a darkness sensor on it that would allow for it to automatically turn on when it if in a poorly light environment. This can add a sense of accessibility to the product and allow it to be, in ways, more user friendly due to its hands free design.
The lamp could also have the ability to remain in the same position on the table but it should be able to light up different areas of the table. After talking to the client about this function this could be done through either the ability to change the light intensity of the lamp or the addition of an adjustable neck on the lamp. Both of these features can make the product more versatile and not restricted to a potential limit of space.
Materials
The client would prefer if the product to contain and be made of sustainable materials such as wood for the base and neck or hemp for the shade of the lamp.
The materials must be cheap enough so that they could be easy to make for a low cost.
List Of Materials That The Product Could Contain
Hardwoods
Ash- This wood could be chosen due to its durable and flexible properties. It also has a very good visual appeal due to its detailed grain and warm colour. The only negatives to this wood are that it is more expensive than other woods as it is far harder to source making it less likely to be chosen over other woods
Beech- This wood has a solid and strong surface with good density this allows it to resist again chipping and gouging more than other types of woods. However the wood may not be desirable to use due to the fact it darkens in colour after long term use which could mess with the products aesthetics as well as the fact it is a relatively heavy wood which can make it unsuitable for the lamp that needs to be relatively light weight.
Birch- This wood is a very strong and durable wood making it long lasting compared to some other woods. it also has a straight grain containing an attractive pattern making it aesthetically pleasing which is a main point of interest for my client. The only downside to the wood is that is it very prone to decay if not properly treated but this problem can be easily solved by painting a thin layer of sanding sealer into the woods surface, this helps the wood resist moisture damage.
Softwoods
European Yew- This wood is very strong and durable which is very important factors to take into consideration when designing and making products. It is also a very easy wood to machine and polish making it able to form very interesting and eye catching shapes. A problematic downside to the wood is the high waste factor of the wood. Due to the large amount of knots in the wood it is very hard to use the wood and may be hard to find in large pieces having to glue many smaller pieces together.
Western Red Cedar- The woods reddish-brown colour, along with its straight grain provides a distinct visual appeal to it. Its excellent workability and natural durability makes it good for both the creation process and the day to day application of it respectively. Despite being very durable it is a fairly sensitive wood that is more prone to dents and scratches than other woods, however that may not be an issue due to the intended use of the wood in this case.
Pine- The relatively soft wood is very aesthetically pleasing due to its blonde colour that looks good even without a finish. Pine being easy to work with allows for many different ways to shape it whether it be by hand or using power tools, it can also be carved. The woods cost effectiveness is something to take into consideration as it is easy to harvest and is strong especially when it is indoors. Pine can often contain knots and imperfections that can affect the wood, and in turn the products, appearance and structural integrity.
Metal
After talking to my client it doesn't seem that much metal should be included in the product. This is mostly due to the fact that it would be more ecologically benefiting to not contain metal as much a fabric like Hemp for the shade of the lamp. At this point in time the only metal this is going to be included in the product is the circuitry within it.
Plastic
The client made it very clear that he wishes to not include plastic within the product at all (this is of course excluding the plastic wrapping around any electrical cabling). This is simply due to the fact he wishes for the product to be extremely eco-friendly.
Size Consideration
The product will have to be a small enough size that it is able to light up a large enough surrounding area but it also needs to keep to a small size to make sure it isn't in the way of any work at the desk. An approximate size of the lamp could be something close to 150mm X 150mm X 300mm, but those are subject to change.
Aesthetics
The client would prefer if the product had a natural type of look to it. It could benefit from a view of the woods grain as apposed to a painted finish.
In keeping with a natural tone the colour of the product the shade on the bulb could be a beiges colour from a fabric like linen.
Potential Colour Palettes
Potential Price
The product must be of a reasonable price to make as it were to be sold it would need to be sold for more than it cost to make. In this case a reasonable price for a bespoke work lamp would be around £60-70 so maybe a budget around £50 would be suitable and realistic.
The Product's Environment
The product will be located in on a work desk in an office space in the house. This means that it must be designed to fit in with this space both aesthetically but also in terms of its functions and quality, for example the products durability and weight.
