Ukraine has always been related to Russia until it declared its independence in 1991 following the colapse of the soviet Union.
December 1, 1991 – Ukraine held an election on independence, with over 90% voting in favor.
2021-Ukraine pushed for NATO membership, and Russia massed troops on the border, demanding NATO to halt its expansion.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance formed in 1949 with the goal of ensuring collective defense among its members.
This was established in response to the threat of the Soviet Union after WWII.
Article 5 in NATO states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all members.
