functionalist view
Murdock- 4 KEY FUNCTIONS OF THE FAMILY: Socialisation, Sexual stabilization, Reproduction, Economic support
Parsons- basic and irreducible functions of the family: Primary socialisation of children, stabilisation of adult personalities (warm bath analogy, biological roles)
Parsons- functionalist fit theory: different families fit different times e.g. extended family in pre-industrial times, isolated nuclear family in post-industrial times
Functionalists believe that the nuclear family is the ideal family type

believe in the traditional nuclear family, family diversity can cause problems, the family should be a place of contentment and refuge with biologically determined roles
