Student
Module 5:Childs(2017): This reading connected to me as a student as it reminded me of the many festivals I went to as a student. In the earlier time of my identity as a student, this was the only time they showcased other cultures and it felt less as if they were showing a culture and more of a concept that happened once or twice a year rather than a lifestyle that some of my classmates were a part of.
Module 7:The State of Critical Race Theory in Education: This connects to the student part of my identity by shedding light on what I was misinformed about as a student regarding critical race theory due to what the media said this article helped clear up confusion and made me realize something we thought was recently implemented was actually created back in the 1990's.
Module 14: Microaggressions in the classroom: This connects to my identity as a student, as it helped me recognize the fact I've heard them all my life inside classrooms. I had normalized these kinds of comments in the classroom without even realizing it. This video showed me what I needed to watch out for, not only in the classroom but in myself as a student, that I'm not committing microaggressions
Female
Module 12: What is Intersectionality?: This connected to this aspect of my identity. This video allowed me to see that this aspect of my identity may be fought against with the fight against sexism. Combined with other parts of my identity they may not both be fought for so even if they focus on preventing sexism my sexuality may not have the same protection.
Young Adult
Module 2 Who am I?: This video shed light on who I am as a young adult that I am simply being the most honest self constantly changing and growing into an adult. I am doing what I am happy with now even though in a week I may hate it. I am someone who is young for now but I will change my sense of self will always remain though even if I'm not a young adult anymore.
English Speaker
Module 8:World Languages: Crash course linguistics #14: This video connected to this part of my identity as an English speaker by showing different reasons for how languages differ such as being able to understand each other like British English and American English while different phrases and words are used can be understood by other English speakers. This makes it considered a dialect since it is able to be understood. There may also be political reasons for languages to be considered different and records and resources that differ from them.
Medical Assistant
Module 1 Identity, Pedagogy, and Change: How this reading connected to me even as someone not in the teaching field is that my identity may effect how I treat my patients and realizing this even through something unrelated to me may help me not focus on my identity in ways that affect my work but still allow myself to be myself.
Module 13:Understanding implicit Bias for Educators(Staats, 2015): This connected to the medical part of my identity by allowing me to connect the fact that even though I want to help people and provide equal support to each patient my own unconscious bias may get in the way of me fairly treating each patient by reading this I can be aware and make sure to double check my thoughts that I am not judging based on unconscious bias.
White
Module 10:Whats the Difference between Hispanic, Latino, Latinx: This video made me think about this part of my identity as I never had to fight to make sure my race was included on a census or that my race wasn't gendered. It also brought to my attention the undertones of Hispanics and by using Latinx you can have a gender-neutral term that refers to the population rather than a male or female-coded term.
Module 11: Native American or American Indian: Am I using the right word?: When I read this article, it made me think about my identity, just like the video in Module Ten. It has helped me realize that this part of my identity has made it easier for me to not only be addressed but also recognized.
Christian
Module 4: Cultures, Sub-Cultures, and Counter-Cultures: This video helped me realize this part of my identity is mainstream without me even knowing with Christian celebrations having school off. It also helped me realize I might be judging people based on this part of my identity without even realizing it. I can help realize this by acknowledging that the world is multicultural not just a melting pot.
Lower-Middle Class
Module 3 Cultural Capital: This video connected to this part of my identity by bringing to light some of the challenges I may have faced and may face in the future coming from a family on the lower side of the middle class with some disadvantages in objectified status. It also lets me know I'm lucky to be able to go to college with support from those around me even if not financially.
American
Module 6:Intercultrual competence explained by a social psychologist: Watching this video connected to me by making it more obvious to myself that I may not have a lot of cultural competence as I am not educated on a lot of different cultures. It also helped me realize what cultural competence is, as it isn't about knowing everything about culture but having an open attitude and engaging curiously with people of a different culture healthily.
Module 15: Cote(2024): This article connected to this part of my identity by showing me more of what the natives of America had to suffer through and be assimilated through to "become American". This connected to me as it showed me as an American I had to accept that my ancestors may have been direct causes of generational trauma.
