Electrons, Waves and Photons
Charge and Current
Definitions
Electron Flow - opposite to conventional, neg to pos
Electrolytes - substances that contain irons when dissolved, act as charge carriers, allow current to flow
-
-
-
-
Kirchhoff's First Law - conservation of charge, current into junction = current out of junction
-
Mean Drift Velocity - average velocity of electron passing through object, propertional to current inversly proportional to number of charge carriers and cross sectional area
-
-
-
Semi-conductors - material that can change tis number of charge carriers, therefore its conductivity
-
Electrical Circuits
Definitions
-
-
-
Potential Divider - method of splitting pd, by connecting 2 resistors in series
-
Resistors in parallel - pd is the same, current is split between the resistors
Resistors in Series - voltage is shared, current is the same

Energy, Power & Resistance
Definitions
Kilowatt-Hour - unit of energy, measures domestic power consumption
-
IV Characteristics - Current against voltage, show how different componetns behave
-
Filament Bulb - filament heats up and glows to product light, increase temp = increase R, since ions vibrate so harder to charge carriers to pass through
-
Electromotive Force -EMF, energy supplied by source per unit charge
Ohmic Conductor - current is directly proportional to pd, when under constant physical conditions
Diode - allows current in one direction only, have a threshhold voltage, above which current can flow
Ohm's Law - current is directly proportional to pd, when under constant external conditions
Potential DIfference - P.D. difference in electrical potential between 2 points. Work done per unit charge
-
-
Resisitivity - How difficult it is for charge to travel in material. proportional to resistance and area and inversly proportional to length of wire.
Resistor - fixed resistance, follows ohms law
