To get out of small talk you need to add a good

You respond to a question and make a friendly comment (Which team are you cheering for? Cleveland, the Browns never win. OR Cleveland, because im from there)
Conversation is like a tree, you can choose a branch to go with
Friendly not stiff
Use follow-up questions

Subjects to ask about
For example
Past
Routines
Future plans
Opinions
How it is going? (eg. project)
How did you end up doing (something)?
Self-disclosure
Tell more information about yourself (and then you can ask the other person)
Low risk
I went for a hike with my dog (likes hiking and has a dog)
Higher risk
Tell your feelings, thoughts, opinions, likings
What about you? Do you like hiking? What's your thoughts about hiking?
Avoid negative -> contructive
Dont want others to think we are judging them
Dont tell cake is too sweet
Later can share and get support but this is for building friendships
