In the early 60s, as they try to explain the behaviour seen during WWII, the USA had started a major conflict with the people of Vietnam
This conflict results in the loss of 55,000 American lives, and 1.5 million Vietnamese lives
The vast majority of Vietnamese lives were lost, were civilian peasants
During this conflict, there was several 'events' that were of particular interest to social psychologists
One of these was the My Lai Massacre in which 350-500 villagers were slaughtered, primarily, children and the elderly
