Contrast in colour of clothing between the child in the middle and the child on the bottom and top. The middle boy has brightly coloured, clean, sophisticated clothing whilst the other boy has dirty, dull damaged clothing
The boy in the middle is smiling and looks happy whilst the other boy seems to have a mad, disrupted face as we can tell by the shape of his eyebrows and eyes.
The kids faces are dirty and emotionless, they don't know what to do or say in such a situation
Cracked mud background indicates that they are in an unstable location sheltering from something dangerous or harmful
Brightly coloured traditional clothing conveys it may be a cultural piece of clothing they took with them
