Ch.5 Basic 6sigma concepts
standard deviation
reduce defects.
measures the distance between data points and the mean of all data. large standard deviation means an overall widespread of points, smaller standard deviation closely clustered.
gives you idea how much variation actually exists in process while taking outlier
Pareto Principle
80/20 rule
20% of causes lead to 80% of effects
AKA "law of vital few"
uses graphical representation of data elements
helpful analytic tool when need to analyze frequencies or causes of problem.
Voice of customer VOC
foundational concept in many quality programs.
customer more consistently satisfied
getting feedback
Likert scale
"strongly agree to strongly disagree"
In 5 point ranking
Basic Metrics
Defects per Unit DPU
how many defects there are in relation to number of units tested
Measures how many defects are in relation to # of units tested. Concerned with total defects
equation: number defects found/number of units in sample
rolled throughput yield RTY
provides probability that unit will be generated by process with no defects
difference from FTY is considers whether rework was needed to generate # of final units
equation:
(# of units entering - (scrap + rework)) / # of units entering process
defects per million opportunities DPMO
(# of defects in a sample/opportunities for a defect in the sample) * 1,000,000
process and improvements
First time Yield FTY
ratio of units produced to units attempted to produce
equation: # of good units produced/ # of units entering the process
