CLIMATE ACTION
Extraordinary Phenomena
Climate change has already caused severe damage to the planet and human life. This slow but relentless process is altering and will continue to alter the appearance of our planet. The polar ice caps will shrink, and the melting of glaciers will lead to a rise in sea levels, submerging lower-lying lands.
Between 1901 and 2018, the global average sea level has risen by approximately 20 cm. Estimates predict that it should increase by between 40 and 80 cm over the next century.
With rising temperatures, weather phenomena will become more extreme like hurricanes and tornadoes will grow increasingly violent, vast areas currently covered with vegetation will dry out, while rainfall will increase in presently desert regions.
Southern Europe is one of the regions that will be most affected by global warming. With temperatures rising by more than 2°C, the Mediterranean area would lose much of its biodiversity, becoming increasingly arid. Alongside drought in the Mediterranean, the temperature increase by the end of the century will vary according to three different warming scenarios.
