Ways we are and can reduce climate change
Renewable Energy:
Energy that is produced by natural sources.
According to the Government of Canada in 2022 our energy creation was distributed so;
Energy creation in Canada (2022) was distributed so;
Hydro: 61.6%
Fossil Fuels: 17.5%
Nuclear: 12.9%
Wind: 5.9%
Biomass: 1.4%
Solar: 0.7
Other: N/A
Fun Fact: Québec is the largest producer of Hydroelectricity in Canada but also the world!
Canada is planning to become "net zero" by 2050. They plan to do this by eliminating non renewable energy sources like coal energy, natural gas and oil.
Carbon Capturing: The process of Carbon Capturing carbon is taking out carbon made from industrial plants (Oil, coal etc.) then storing it deep under ground.
The effect of this is lowering the Green House Gas Effect which is raising the tempreture of the earth
How effective: Captures around 90% of all CO2
Natural Carbon Capturing/ Carbon Sinks:
"A natural environment that absorbs carbon"
Forests
Large Bodies of Water
Grasslands and Wetlands
Sustainable Agriculture: Farming plants and animals more efficiently for the environment and resources
Crop Rotation: Rotating crops improves soil health letting the soil and plants absorb more CO2
Reducing animal numbers: Lots of meat goes wasted each year (153 Million Tonnes). This is a lot of unneeded methane coming from these animals, especially cows.
Water Management: Properly watering plants can reduce the amount of wasted water (Less water use = less energy used) and means the plants will be healthier.
Waste Reduction
Reduce
By reducing the amount of waste sent to incinerators, it will lower the amount of green house gasses in the atmosphere.
Reuse
Many things we use are reusable that we don't know about, if we do reuse items it will force less things to be thrown out which is wasteful.
Clothing, Plastic bottles, glass bottles, paper and plastic bags, clothing and bedding, and news papers/scrap paper.
Recycle
If we recycle properly less items will end up in the Landfill which takes us valuable space for green initiatives and many other things.
Government Action: What the Government is doing to combat climate change (Canada)
Paris Agreement: The Paris Agreement is a binding goal between many countries to help stop climate change. They have pledged to limit temperature rise to 2 degrees and hopefully under 1.5.
Carbon Tax: The carbon tax is a tax by the government which depending on how much CO2 you purchase there will be an increasing tax by year, This incentives people to use less carbon based things like cars.
Creation of Public Transport: Cities like Toronto are creating more GREEN public transportation to prevent people from driving as much.
