minimal group paradigm
ingroup
us, group of people who share a sense of belonging , feeling of common identity
outgroup
them, group that people perceive as distinctively different from thier in-group
ingroup bias
tendency to favour ones own group, easier to do when resources are limited
social identity
part of individuals self concept which derives from his/her knowledege of their membership of a social group (ethnicity)
we/us aspect of our self concept that comes from our group membership (ethnocentrism, conformity to social norms)
roles
patterns of behaviour that distinguish between differnt acitivities within the group that interrelate to one another for the greater good of the group (informal or formal)
task or social related- division of labour, indicate how members relate to one another give members a place within the group

deindividuation
loss of self awareness and evaluation apprehension- groups can generate a feeling of excitement, being involved in something bigger than oneself
some situations lead people more likely to abandon normal restraints and become responsive to the group/crowd norms
group size, physical anonymity, arousing and distracting activities
stigma
stigmatised individuals posses/ believed to possess some attribute or characteristic that converts a social identity that is devalued in a social context

pnes own group is central to everything, we exaggerate and intensify everything peculiar in outgroup, different to us (stereotyping)
prisoner dilema
2 suspects questioned separately by the DA, both guilty but DA has enough evidence to convict them of lesser offence= DA provides the suspect with an incentive for each to confess privately, if one confesses and the other doesnt the confessor will be granted a lower sentence
if both confess, each will receive a moderate sentence

prejudice
holding of derogatory social attitudes or cognitive beliefs, the expression of negative affect to the display of hostile or discriminatory behaviour towards members of a group on account of their membership of that group
