PERSONAL LIFE FAMILY VIEW
PERSONAL LIFE ON THE FAMILY
focuses on the meanings individuals give to their relationships
CRITICISMS OF FUNC., MARX., FEM.
they assume trad nuclear family is dominant type, ignoring increased family diversity
assume family members are passive puppets manipulated by structure of society (too deterministic)
DONOR CONCEIVED CHILDREN (SMART)
some donor conceived families focus on importance of social relationships; labels are placed on a carer based on their social relation with the child
some conflict can rise from differences in appearances, however, when children see someone who looks similar to them
this can lead to questions about donor parent, donor 'siblings', and if donor parents count as grandparents
changing circumstances can mean involvement + how donor child sees donor parent can change too
since our our meanings for people can change over time, it shows how the people in our lives also change; they can stay, go or come back
CONNECTEDNESS THESIS (SMART)
individuals have restrictions about their personal relationships; choices/ options are influenced by networks of existing relationships
C(Class) A(Age) G(Gender) E(Ethnicity)*
each can impact decisions about relationships
they can limit the kinds of relationships, identities and families formed for individuals
examples
GENDER
divorce: women expected to take custody -> take care of children more -> less time to seek new relationships
AGE
younger children = more supervised; only having meaningful, long-term freliendships/ relationships when slightly older
elderly maybe physically uncapable of maintaining ties with family; could be cut off for being too dependant
CLASS
financial struggles -> struggles to house a family, or couple struggle to have kids/ get married
ETHNICITY
culture - divorce sometimes frowned upon; individuals lack freedom to leave relationships and onto better ones due to cultural pressure
