short term causes of global warming
transportation methods
solutions
use electric cars. electric cars are better than gas cars because they don't release any greenhouse gasses as they are driving. they don't need any fuel to drive. the only gas emissions come from mining the metals in the battery
use public transit. public transit is far more efficient than cars. according to
Modeshift, someone can remove 4,800 pounds of carbon emissions per year by taking public transit
advance technologies in hydrogen cars. hydrogen cars don't release Co2 of other harmful gasses into the atmosphere, but instead release water vapour. a
concept car
uses this idea already, and advancing this technology would be beneficial to our world !
make roads more efficient. Many gasses are released into the atmosphere because people are stuck in gridlock, releasing CO2 and not even moving. by improving traffic flow, people will be stuck in gridlock less, releasing useless greenhouse gasses
improve cars fuel efficiency by making more efficient engines. most cars are only 30-35 percent efficient, so for every dollar you spend on gas, over half is lost.
problems
people stuck in traffic, idling, and releasing CO2. it is a waste to pay for gas, and then just waste it idling in traffic, releasing gas into the atmosphere
produces lots of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses compared to other methods of energy production, such as solar/wind farming and hydroelectric dams. (image courtesy of solar.com)
fairly inefficient. most cars are inefficient compared to other methods. they are faster, but less efficient.
deforestation
problems
less CO2 is absorbed by the trees, raising global temperatures. trees absorb CO2 from our atmosphere, making them great
carbon sinks
. this helps mitigate the greenhouse effect, though not nearly as much as the ocean. as people are cutting down the trees, they are releasing the leftover CO2 in the treess back into the atmosphere
solutions
cultivate more bamboo farms. bamboo grows much faster than normal wood, and it also requires much less land. combined with the fact bamboo also grows 30 times faster than hardwood, bamboo is superior in almost every way.
use more sustainable wood-harvesting practices. when companies harvest wood, the typically don't replant, or they don't do a good job. because of this, wood doesn't grow back as well.
a solution is to fly drones over the area, and drop seeds strategically
.
arctic ice melting
problems
releasing gas into the atmosphere. as the ice in the arctic and antarctic is melting, it releasing ancient bacteria and gasses trapped for thousands of years. the ice contains over 1.7 trillion tonnes of CO2 and methane.
reflecting less solar energy back out into the atmosphere. this is a problem because the earth will absorb more energy, heating up more, and melting more ice. this results in a positive feedback loop, making the earth warmer and warmer.
solutions
the only real solution to this is to try and
reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
by doing this, it will reduce the amount of heat being kept in by our atmosphere, and keep the ice from melting.
fossil fuels
problems
inefficient compared to alternative options. nuclear can power just as many homes with less space, and nuclear is release over 50 times less greenhouse gasses than other mainstream alternatives.
solutions
use nuclear energy. While the chernobyl accident is the result nuclear gone wrong, nuclear is still a very good way to go in terms of energy. it has the scalability of fossil fuels, efficiency like no other, and it is more green than almost anything else.
use solar energy. solar energy is very good for powering individual homes. it is good for small scale, but not very practical for entire cities. despite this, it is still a good energy source and practical for reducing a person's carbon footprint
build more hydro dams. Hydro is very good in terms of producing clean energy. it relies on water to turn turbines and produce a fair amount of electricity
create more sources for energy production. if none of these options are appealing, maybe try and come up with your own energy source. if people can harvest the energy of the atom, we can do it with other things to.
agriculture
problems
requires land
solutions
eat less meat. livestock such as
cows and others take up 1 acre of land.
that is quite a lot, as
this much land could feed one person for an entire year on somewhat of a vegetarian diet
. nobody need to completly give up meat, but maybe eat a little bit less.
artificially cultivated meat. there are many smart people out there, enough so that humans can regrow meat from tissue cells,
creating a burger patty from potentially 0.5 grams of stem cells.
while this technology is still very young, it might take over traditional meat raising tactics.
