The free will defence
Augustine
Evil is not a thing that has an independent existence and pots to destroy God's creation. Rather it is a privation (absence) of good.
-
When Adam and Eve used their free will in order to turn away from God, they created a privation of good in themselves and the world.
It was original sin which caused the world to malfunction, resulting in natural evil, and the same goes for moral evil
Mackie
-
He could not develop all that is good in humanity without giving people the freedom to choose or reject all that is bad in humanity
Freedom justifies suffering because it gives us moral responsibility, the freedom to choose or reject what is good
