        an earth retaining structure which also support the ends of the deck
      - Common type;
        
        Mass concrete: small, no reinforcememt
        
        Reinforced Tee (RT): similar to RW
        
        Sloping: similar to RT but more clearance at GL & shorter span deck
        
        Strutted: as RT but propped
        
        Abutments on fill: economical to place a small abutment on fill rather than construct large abutments
        
        Bank structure/bank seat: used when the side span are open
        
        Skeleton abutment: generally used when the bridge span between embankments. Founded on unmade ground
    - - Stand between the end supports & can be subjected to vertical, horizontal & bending forces
      - Whenever possible, slender piers shd be used - sufficient flexibility to allow temperature, shrinkage& creep effects to be distributed to abutments w/o need for bearings at piers to intermediate joints at deck
      - Common type:
        
        Piers - Vertical wall (solid/voided);
        Columns (single, group, group with cross head beam)
    - - ** Earth retaining structure which deal with problem - transition from the upper level to lower level
      - Adjacent to abutments & may be attached to it / independent structure
      - Shape depends on factors:
        height, of embankment, depth of cutting & skew
