Voc ed seen as inferior to academical qualifications. W/c more likely to take voc ed --> reinforces divisions between social classes
Work experience is boring & repetitive and only minimally develops skills. Still low % of 16-18 in work so seen as way of reducing youth crime than producing skilled WF
Birdwell et al = schools focus on bright students who want to go onto higher ed --> little help given to those w/ vocational aspirations
Schools undervalued part time work, volunteering, after skl clubs
Report found= voc qualifications that were encouraged to aim for were actually worthless & work related training was low quality
Post-school training schemes = way of employers getting cheap labour rather than them helping them develop their skills
