interviews
a verbal exchange in which one person attempt to acquire information and gain an understanding from another person

purpose
1- means of gathering information about a persons knowledge, values, preference and attitudes

types
structured interviews- often collected for quant data, standardised Qs

non-directive interviews- used to explore an issue or topic in depth and questions are not generally, pre-planned
researcher must have a notion of the objectives of the research and what issues are going to be addressed in the interview

focused interviews
based upon the respondents subjective responses to a known situation in which they have been involved
interviewer has prior knowledge of this situation and is thus able to re-focus respondents if they drift away from the theme
interview schedule

a few carefully words Qs (open ended, avoid leading Qs, not ambiguous)

focus groups
groups of people are asked their opinions on a particular topic, capitalises on the communication of ppts to generate data

methodology
4-8 ppts in each group- homogenous (ppts share similar characteristics), heterogenous (ppts dont share any similar characteristics)
research acts as moderator- pose Qs, ensure discussion keeps flowing
