Memory - Revision (14/1/25)
Baddeley and Hitch
Working memory model (WMM)
(More in-depth for short term)
(LTM)
Episodic buffer
Phonological loop
Articulatory process
Phonological store
Sound, capacity of anything that can be said within 2 seconds, duration is limited
Central executive (CE)
Divides tasks - most important / least known about
VIsuo-spacial sketchpad
Pros and cons
Dividing up tasks - if two or more activities require one store they compete for resources so neither can be understood or encoded however if one item of information is in the visuo-spacial sketchpad and another in the phonological loop both can be done simultaneously such as listening to music and drawing
Eye witness testimony (EWT)
Atkinson and Sheriffin
Multi-store Model (MSM)
Short term memory
Sensory store
Duration of less than a second, no capacity unless stimuli is being paid attention to, encodes acoustic and visual
Duration is less than 18 seconds without rehearsal, capacity is 4 chunks or 5-9 items, encodes acoustically and visually
Long term
Duration and capacity are both nearly infinite however cues might be needed, encodes semantically
Encoding
Semantic
Acoustic
Visual
Images
Sound
Giving something meaning
Pros and cons
Pros
Cons
Too simplistic , doesn't fully explain each aspect,
Simple, easy to understand, clearly showing different part of brain having distinct functions
Forgetting
