INTRO TO CRIME
Crime - An action which breaks the law; it can be against the person (murder), against property (vandalism) or against the state (treason).
Manslaughter or Murder - Murder and manslaughter are both types of homicide, which is the act of killing another person. But determining whether a killing is murder or manslaughter depends on the perpetrator’s intentions. Did they act in order to end another person’s life, or was the death an unintended consequence of reckless behaviour?
Religious traditions accept that everyone makes mistakes, but they also teach the idea of the punishment of the wrong doing.

FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness is a core belief in Christianity and one that Jesus emphasised in his teachings. Christians are expected to forgive others and Christians believe that God will forgive them.
However, many Christians would argue that forgiveness is not a replacement for punishment. It is possible to both forgive somebody who has committed murder and to believe that justice is done when they are sentenced to a period of time in prison.

TREATMENT OF CRIMINALS
Community Service - it is a form of punishment for the less serious crimes which take up the time of the offender to reflect on what they have done. Its purpose is to act as a deterrent to crime. Christians and Jews agree with community service as it is an opportunity for the criminal to repair the damage they have done.
Prisons - it is a form of punishment to make an offender pay for their crime through a loss of their freedom. A criminal is locked into a cell for a period of time and only allowed out at set times. It is a punishment usually reserved for serious crimes. Their prison sentence serves a protection for society from dangerous criminals. Reformation is one of the main purposes of a prison. Christians and Jews believe to be seen as fair for severe crimes but should be encouraged to do positive activities.
PRINCIPLE OF UTILITY
The principle of utility helps to determine if an action is right or wrong. It is a good way to decide between right and wrong as it takes people into account when coming to the best action.
