Types of Bones
Flat Bone
-
-
Examples include the cranium, scapula and sternium
-
Short Bone
-
They are responsible for bearing weight, absorbing shock and making fine movements
They are small, light and very strong
-
Long Bone
-
-
Examples include the femur, humerus, tibia, fibula, metacarpals, metatarsals, and philanges
-
-
Functions
-
Blood cell production
-
Blood cells are made in the bone marrow of long bones such as the femur, humerus and ribs
The bone marrow of a human adult produces all the red blood cells, some of the white cells, and all the platelets in the body
-
Protection
The skeleton protects vital organs
such as the brain, heart and lungs
For example, the cranium protects the brain, the ribs protect the heart and lungs, the pelvis protects the abdomen, and the vertebrae protects the spinal cord
-
Joints
-
-
Freely movable joints
-
Examples: the shoulder, elbow, hips, knee and ankle joints
-
Slightly movable joints
They are also known as cartiliganinous joints because they are joined by ligaments and/or cartilage(which absorbs the movement)
