Hyperventilation (Panic Attack)
Cause
Acute anxiety
Symptoms
Chest pan
Hyperventilation
Anxiety
nausea
vertigo (dizzy)
numbness
restlessness
trance-like state
PABCD Treatment
Postion for patient comfort
DO NOT ADMINISTER OXYGEN IF HYPERVENTILATION
Monitor vitals
If unsure consider activating EMS immediately
Activate ems- call for assistance if patient deteriorates
Proceed with cpr only if necessary
Sings of recovery
Paatient regains composure
Signs of deterioration
Patient develops tachycardia, vital signs appear unstable,
Asthma
Causes
Spasms and constriction of the bronchi
Symptoms
Labored breathing
wheezing
coughing spasms
anxiety
PABCDS treatment
Patient placement
Upright or as comfortable for patient
Maintain open airway
Breathe for patient if necessary
Monitor pulse
If unsure, consider activating EMS immediately
Monitor vital signs
Adminster oxygen
Activate EMS- call for assistance if patient's condition deterioraes
Signs patient is Recovering
Patien'ts breathing returns to normal rate and sound
Signs of Deterioration
Breathiing does not improve
cyanosis develops
vital signs are unstable
re- evaluate diagnosis

Treatment
Supine if patient loses conciousness :
Perfrom heimlich maneuver
Attempt clear airway
If patient does not improve
Activate EMS
Place patiet supine
Tilt head backwards and open airway :
check repiratory sounds
Perform abdominal thrusts
Signs of recovery
Breathing returns to norm
al
foreign body is removed or swallowed
Signs of Deterioration
Cyanosis :

Loss of consciousness
Cardiac or respiratory arrest
Re-evaluate diagnosis
maintain basic life support
