Trade and towns grow together
When the trade grew europe grew with people
There was no sewers so people dumped household and human waste in front of their house
This caused problems becuase the towns were very small and the streets were filled with everyones waste and amimals
The houses they lived in were not in good shape, they didn't have fresh air, light , and clean water most people never even bathed
Most people chose to move to towns to purse all the opportunities they offered
Many serfs ran away
Merchant Class Shifts the Social Order
Why were changes in financial services necessary to expand trade?
Merchants were limited by taxes and fees
Merchants and craftspeople didn't fit the social order
Burghers - Merchant class town dwellers
Burghers resented feudal lords taxes, fees, and rent because they interfered with commerce and trade
They organized themselves and demanded privileges
Wanted freedom from certain types of tolls and the right to govern the town
Fought against landlords and won these rights by force
People moved into towns
Trade was heavily depended on
Made new opportunities for people
Serfs ran away in search of a better life
After a year and a day they were officially free from their lord
Defied legal obligations to their lords
Living in towns became popular
Feudalism fell
