Methane, like carbon dioxide, is a greenhouse gas that is 28 to 36 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in terms of keeping heat trapped within the atmosphere. Although it has a short lifetime, lasting only a decade in the atmosphere, in the short term, its effects are much stronger than carbon dioxide. It is produced by both natural and man-made causes, such as wetlands and ocean floor sediments, and agriculture, fossil fuel, landfill, and waste. Additionally, it contributes to creating ozone in the troposphere, which is toxic to humans and animals. Lastly, it is a major component to global warming.
