why do we need research
-
-
-
-
importance
-
important to combat previous, damaging research
-
replication
-
-
why replicate? to avoid flukes, to increase confidence in our results, indepedndent replications, replication can involve minor modifications (different situations or ppts)
-
hypothesis
alternative hypothesis- states that there is a differnce/effect/relationship between the variables we are studying
scientific hypothesis- falsifiable, testable, precise
empirically testable proposition about facts, behaviour, relationship, usually based on theory, states an expected outcome resulting from specific conditions or assumptions
aim is to confirm/disprove the null hypothesis rather than finding evidence that support the alternative hypothesis
null hypothesis- state there is no difference/effect/relationship between the variables we are investigating
deduction
top down- laws that are certain, argues from general premises to a specific conclusion, if premises are true the conclusion is certain
-
induction
-
Popper
induction rests on the assumption that rules and laws which held in the past will also hold in the future
-
generalisability
the extent to which findings can be generalised across a sample or population, use of stats
distribution
sampling distributions of the mean- plot the sample means of many samples from one particular population
