In Grade 7 Social Studies, students will build on the foundational concepts and ideas that were developed in Grade 6 by examining how various historical events, relationships, and decisions have shaped ideas about governance and identity in Canada. In Grade 6, Social Studies focuses on democratic principles, citizenship, and diversity in contemporary Canada, Grade 7 establishes an interpretive framework for these ideas within historical experiences and perspectives linked to Confederation, treaty-making, and coexistence. This in turn provides further context in Grade 8, where students explore historical changes occurring globally in the forms of imperialism, exploration, and economic transformations. The study of the fur trade and National Policy within Grade 7 corresponds with the Grade 8 study of European imperialism. Taken together, such grades allow the student to understand that events within Canadian history are part of larger global patterns and that these events continue to shape modern forms of governance, identity, and cultural diversity.
