Skeletal System
Types of bones
Long bone
-
Long bones have a thick outside layer of compact bone and an inner medullary cavity containing bone marrow.
-
Short bone
Short bones include the carpal bones of the hands that allow movement of the wrist, and the tarsal bones of the feet that allow movement of the foot.
-
Irregular bone
Irregular bones vary in shape and structure and therefore do not fit into any other category (flat, short, long).
They often have a fairly complex shape, which helps protect internal organs.
For example, the vertebrae, irregular bones of the vertebral column, protect the spinal cord.
Flat bone
-
They have a flat shape, not rounded. Examples include the skull and rib bones.
They have a flat shape, not rounded. Examples include the skull and rib bones.
Flat bones have marrow, but they do not have a bone marrow cavity.

Functions
-
-
Blood cells production
-
Bone marrow produces red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that prevent infection and platelets that control bleeding.
Movement
-
The bones form joints and act as levers, allowing muscles to pull on them to produce movement.
