Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850. He was the only son of a successful engineer.

He studied engineering and law at the University of Edinburgh . In 1873, he moved to the French Riviera to recover from tuberculosis, an illness he had his whole life.

Writing Success

Stevenson’s first big success was Treasure Island (1883), a famous pirate adventure. Then, he wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a story about the fight between good and evil inside one person.

Later Life in the Pacific
To improve his health, Stevenson sailed to the South Pacific in 1888, visiting places like Tahiti, Hawaii, and Samoa.

He eventually settled in Samoa, where the local people admired him and called him “Tusitala” (the storyteller). He died suddenly in 1894 and left behind travel writings like In the South Seas (1896).

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

The story is about Dr. Jekyll, a respected scientist who creates a drug to separate the good and evil sides of himself. The drug turns him into Mr. Hyde, an evil and ugly man.
