THE IMMUNE SYSTEM - Coggle Diagram
THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
MAIN COMPONENTS
SPLEEN:
- largest lymphatic organ
- contains white blood cells
LYMPH NODES:
- produce and stores cells fighting infection and disease
- contain lymph and become swollen during an infection
BONE MARROW:
- material found inside bones
- consists of stem cells supported by stroma
- 2 type of cellular tissue = one produces blood cells; one produces stromal cells
LYMPHOCYTES:
- small white blood cells
- B CELLS make antibodies
- T CELLS help destroy infected / cancerous cells
THYMUS:
- leaf shaped organ below the breastbone
- maintains the production of antibodies
- it is where T cells mature
LEUCOCYTES:
- white blood cells which identify and eliminate pathogens
- LEUCOCYTOSIS is referred to a high count of them
HOW IT WORKS
ILLNESS
can occur when
- performance of immune system is conpromised
- pathogens are aggressive
- a new pathogen
- Identify antigenes (proteins of foreign cells/organism/substances)
- memorize processes to defend the body against known pathogens
Body cells are identified as "self"
If not, an autoimmune reaction occurs
-
MAIN TASKS
- neutralizing pathogens and removing them from the body
- recognizing harmful substances and make them ineffective
- fighting against changed body's cells because an illness
