Wood Technology: Theory Notes
Wood Properties and Types
Softwoods.
Come from coniferous (evergreen) trees.
Fast-growing; less dense.
Examples.
Pine: Lightweight, easy to work, used in contruction and frniture.
Spruce: Light, strong, used in musical instruments and construction.
Wood Properties.
Grain: Determines strength and appearance.
Moisture Content: Affects shrinkage, swelling, and stability.
Durabillity: Resistance to decay and pests.
Hardwoods.
Slow-growing; dense and durable.
Examples.
Oak: Strong, durable, used in furniture and flooring.
Mahogany: Attractive grain, used in furniture and veneers.
Beech: Hard, easy to work, used in tools and toys.
Comes from decidious (broad-leaf) trees.
Woodoworking Tools
Hand Tools
Marking Tools
Marking Gauge: Marks parallel lines to an edge.
Try Square: Marks right angle and checks squareness.
Cutting Tools
Chisels: For carving or jointing wood.
Coping Saw: Curved cuts.
Tennon Saw: Straight cuts in small joints.
Shaping Tools
Plane: Smoothens or reduces thickness.
Rasps/Flies: Shape and smooth edges.
Machine Tools
Drill Press: For drilling accurate holes.
Belt Sander: For smoothing large surfaces.
Bandsaw: For cutting curves and straaight lines.
Woodworking Techniques
Shaping: Filling, planing, and sanding to achieve desired forms.
Jointing
Types of joints
Butt Joint: Simple, but weak.
Mortise and Trnon: Strong, traditional joint.
Dovetail: Decorative and strong for boxes.
Cutting: Using saws and chisels accurately.
Finishing
Techniqus: Standing , staining, painting, varnishing.
Importance: Protects the wood and enhances appearance.
Manufactured Boards
MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard): Fine wood fibers compressed. Smooth, easy to paint.
Chipboard: Wood chips compressed with resin. Affordable but less durable.
Plywood: Layers of wood glued at right angles. Strong and stable.
Sustainability and Enviromental Issues
Recycling: Using old wood to reduce waste.
Defrostation: Causes loss of biodiversity and climate change.
Sustainable Forestry: Replanting trees to replace those harvested.
