It was closed and officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985.
This street is mentioned in many songs, and appeared in even more films. The Disney film Cars is present this famous highway, and its original title was Route 66.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE ALONG ROUTE 66?
• The Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma.
• McDonald Brothers burger stand in San Bernardino, the location of the original shop, which is now the McDonald's Museum.
• The Mojave Desert in Southern California. That was all the most feared part of Route 66, but now it's just like thata great place to visit. Watch out for rattlesnakes!
• The Grand Canyon is not on Route 66, it just is an hour north of the highway, then many people visit it.
• Cadillac Ranch is an absolute must-see in Texas: there are lots of half-buried Cadillacs in the desert!
