Rodney's theory is undermined entirely by hi dogmatic reject of of capitalism, in his work he procliams that only Marxism provides the tools for the development of the Third world (Rodney, 2022) and then contuines on to claim 'it is already the ideology which allows North Korea to transform itself from a backward, quasi-feudal, quasi-colonial terrain into an independent, industrial power.’ (Rodney, 2022, p39).
However, this statement and his later arguement that bourgeois economics have been ineffective in deveoping the Third World (Rodney, 2022) can be empircally tested by using two countries, North Korea and Vietnam, that Rodney describes as Marxist ssuccess stories (2022) and looking at their trajectories.
Although since 2012 and the rise of Kim Jung Un the North Korean state has, tentivly, offered some economic reforms through increased freedom to managers and the creation of Special Economic Zones, economic growth has been stagnent (NK book, get proper cite).
The economy remains firmly a control economy and the economy has not grown in the last 12 years, the only economic devleopment is the growing presence of China in the economy and the countries slow morphing into a informal colony as Chinese trade makes up 91% of non-inter Korea trade (NK book).
-
Compare this with the economy of Vietnam which went through a process of market reforms in the late 80s and has resulted in the collapse of poverty from 49% in 1992 to 3.23% in 2012 (NK book).
When these reforms were passed North Korea was the larger economy, since then the Vietnamese economy has ecliplised it (NK book).
Although Rodney was writing from before these events, it makes his claims that only Marxism can develop the Third World disproven. The different trajectories of these two countries demonstrates at least that Marxism is not the only tool for development, but more realsitically that some form of marketistion is the best tool for development.
