WEEK 11: Evolution
key terms
evolution: the gradual process in which a species changes over time, leading to the development of a new species from a common ancestor (lineage splitting event)
-
-
mutation: change in the bio-chemical structure of a gene (change of nitrogen base in DNA sequence) causes new parent material to be introduced into the gene pool of the population.
adaptation: character trait that came from the process of natural selection. it must be heritable, functional, and improve the fitness of a species in its environment
example: adaptation of the Peppered Moth: species of moth changed its color from spotty to dark grey to fit in with the sooty backgrounds of post industrial britain to avoid bird predation.
artificial selection: character traits that were introduced via man-made processes. eg) farmers cultivate many crops from wild mustard by picking certain genetic traits
speciation: the process where 2 or more species diverge from a single, common ancestor (a species has groups of members with such different genetic composition that they become so genetically distinct from each other that they cannot interbreed )
