- - - - Timothy San Pedro "Silence as Weapons" - I think it is extremely important to assert cultural identity because if more people were more sensitive to other cultures because racism is a real problem and being Hispanic, people think that you're a lesser person and that the white people are better off than we are. Going to stores I have been told that they do not accept food stamps or government currency because they assumed that I did not have the money to pay. This was never the case where I could not pay. If there was more cultural understanding or respect, then this type of criticism or stereotypes could be diminished and we Hispanics would not have to deal with this.

        There were two boys in my choir class who immigrated to the States and they only spoke Spanish which was challenging in a choir class. My teacher did her best but there were two other students in the class who did speak Spanish and were able to help translate for them, these two girls were my friends. I feel as though teachers should be able to speak or understand Spanish or another language to a certain degree at least because there will always be a time when this kind of incident happens. Language is required to learn in school and college so I believe that teachers should be able to understand another language to teach. These two boys liked to sing but they never felt included in class because they could not understand what they were reading or doing and the teacher was not able to fully help or support or foster their learning so they ended up not liking the class and switched classes.

        I am in the process of learning Spanish and my girlfriend's sister's husband is learning English as a Spanish speaker. I never enjoyed the Spanish classes I took in high school because our teacher only spoke to us in Spanish and it was really difficult especially because it is not general Spanish, it is formal and no one speaks that way in Spanish. I have found it better to learn from my girlfriend's family because they are fluent and even though I have challenges, they manage to help me progress much farther than the two years of class did. I can understand this problem with SEI because, in class, all of the culture was stripped from the language because of how professional the learning was, all of the beauty was taken out of the language. My girlfriend took the same classes and agreed that she would never speak like that as a Hispanic family who is from Mexico and that the class took the beauty or the fun and culture out of her language.

        Having a more integrated approach in SEI could be beneficial because all of the classes I’ve taken take the beauty out of the Spanish culture with how straightforward it is. I do not personally have any experience with SEI or anything like that but I am closer to someone who is trying to learn English and his learning is not being accommodated or helped with SEI style.
  - - - Montero- Hernandez et al. "Caught between silence & safe spaces" - I can relate to this article as a college freshman in a majority-white university and town. NAU is not as culturally adverse as I would hope and I find myself being one of the only persons of color in any of my classes, most times I am the only Mexican in class and that feels ostracizing at points and does not give me safe spaces in most cases to express myself. In this class, my group mates help provide a safe space as all 3 of us are Hispanic and can understand each other's cultures. It is challenging because this is the only small group where I feel comfortable being who I am and not having to feel like I have to change myself to fit in.

        Integrating culture into teaching for me would be incredibly valuable because I grew up wishing that I was different or that I could be more Mexican because I never learned Spanish and I never grew up with traditional foods so I always had a hard time fitting myself places and I feel as though if I had seen more of my born culture in school I would have felt more in my skin in a place that is so judgmental and felt more connected to my culture.

        My club team coach affected my learning and growth as suggested in the article because she had a bias against me and my race. She tried to speak to me and my other Hispanic friend in Spanish and the rest of the team in English. She always separated me and my friend from our other white friends and called us disruptive and distracting. All of her actions added up for me and my friend and it negatively affected us because it made us not want to play or show our true skill. After all, we were disrespected. Our coach would pull us out for no reason and even not play my friend because of her bias but when we tried to explain it to our friend, she played it off and diminished our problems. If coaches and teachers could reduce their bias, I believe me and my friend could have furthered our progress and potential rather than diminishing us the way she did.
