Lesson 6: Spelling with w-controlled Vowels
W-controlled Vowels
When a consonant w controls the vowel in a word, it can make different sounds. In some words, ow sounds like /ow/ (as in town), and in others, like at the end of words (as in show), it sounds like the long /o/ sound.
Irregular Vowel Sounds
Since the vowel + w can have more than one sound, these vowel sounds are considered irregular. To help figure out how to say an ow word, it's helpful to look at the other words in the sentence for clues.
Example Sentence
A blue cartoon dog growling
The dog growls.
This shows how the "w-controlled" vowel sound can vary. In some words, like growl, the vowel sound is irregular.
