Lesson 3: Spelling Words with Irregular Vowel Sounds
Irregular Vowel Teams
Some vowel teams do not follow the usual rule where the first vowel says its name. These are called irregular vowel teams
au: Sounds like "aw" in saw
Example: haul, taught
ea: Can sound like "e" in met or "e" in clean, or "a" in steak
Example: bread, clean, steak
ei: Can sound like long /a/ in say or short /e/ in met
Example: veil, foreign
oi: Sounds like "oy" in joy
Example: spoil, boil
oo: Can sound like "ew" in flew, "u" in put, or long /o/ in door
Example: food, book, door
ou: Can sound like "u" in but, "oo" in boo, or "ow" in cow, or long /o/ in shoulder
Example: touch, group, shoulder
Spelling Words
already – by this time
broom – a tool used for sweeping
famous – something that is well-known
fool – a person who doesn't obey God; someone who makes bad decisions
hook – a curved piece of metal that can be used to catch fish
join – to fasten together
measure – to find the size of something
neighborhood – an area where people all live inside of a city
rooster – a male chicken
shoulder – the body part that connects the arm to the rest of the body
spoil – to damage something
surround – to enclose on all sides
taught – what your teacher did yesterday when she or he helped you to learn
touch – to feel with some part of your body
treasure – something very valuable
