Lesson 1: Grammar - Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Person: teacher, friend
Place: school, park
Thing: book, mountain
Idea: faith, joy
Identifying Nouns
You can test whether a word is a noun by placing a, an, or the in front of it. If the phrase makes sense, it is likely a noun.
Example: The room (noun) vs. The red (not a noun).
Common Nouns
Refer to general people, places, things, or ideas.
Examples: teacher, church, road.
Do not require capitalization.
Proper Nouns
Refer to specific people, places, or things.
Examples: Mr. Smith, Charlotte's Web, Plymouth Rock.
Must always be capitalized.

An adjective is a word that describes or tells about a noun. It provides more information or details, such as the shape, size, color, or characteristics of the noun.
Adjectives Answer These Questions About a Noun
Which one?
What kind?
How many?
Examples
Which one? This duck.
How many? Five girls.
What kind? The yellow duck, the big duck.
Types of Adjectives
Descriptive adjectives: Tell what kind (e.g., fat, brown, tall, small).
Quantity adjectives: Tell how many (e.g., five, many, several).
Identifying adjectives: Answer "Which one?" (e.g., this, that, these, those).
