- Description: One of the most traditional beer styles in the UK

- Ingredients: Well-roasted malts or barley
- Character: Less hopped than bitters
- Taste: Chocolate, nutty and burnt flavours
- Strength: 3-3.5% ABV (not very strong)
- Description: Similar to pale ales; developed in the late 19th century for draught beer
- Colour: Deep bronze to copper
- Ingredients: Slightly darker crystal malts
- Character: Spicy, peppery, grassy hops; powerful bitterness
- Taste: Tangy fruit, juicy and nutty malt flavour
- Strength: 3.4-3.9% ABV (light to medium)
- Description: First brewed for the colonial market in the early 19th century

- Taste: Juicy malt, citrus fruits
- Strength: 4%+ ABV (medium)
- Description: Closest to lager; refreshing when served cool
- Colour: Pale amber, gold, yellow or straw-coloured

- Taste: Light, clean, subtle
- Strength: 5%+ ABV (quite strong)
- Description: Top-fermented wheat beer; common in Germany, Holland, and Belgium
- Colour: Paler than other beers
- Ingredients: Malted wheat, hops
- Taste: Smoky, with hints of cloves, banana, and vanilla
- Strength: 5%+ ABV (quite strong)
