Lesson 1: Grammar: Using the Dictionary
Vocabulary
Alphabetical order: Words arranged according to the order of the alphabet.
Control: To hold back or restrain.
Dictionary: A book listing words and their meanings, pronunciation, and spelling.
Entry word: A word listed in the dictionary.
Guide word: A word at the top of a dictionary page showing the first and last words on that page.
Pronounce: To say a word aloud.
Pronunciation: How a word is spoken.

What a Dictionary Does
A dictionary helps with

Correct spelling.
The meaning/definition of a word.
Entry words in the dictionary are listed in alphabetical order. Use the first, second, or later letters to find their correct position.
Guide Words
Found at the top of dictionary pages.
Left guide word: First word on the page.
Right guide word: Last word on the page.
Words on that page will fall alphabetically between the two guide words.
How to Find Words in a Dictionary
Look at the first letter of the word you need.
Go to the pages with words starting with that letter.
Use guide words to narrow it down by the second or third letter.
Find the word and read its details.
Using an Online Dictionary
Works like a paper dictionary but without guide words.
You can type the word to get its meaning, pronunciation (audio), synonyms, and antonyms.
Be cautious online. Use safe, student-friendly dictionary websites with adult supervision.
Internet Safety Tips
Never share personal information or photos.
Avoid responding to strangers.
Report anything strange or uncomfortable to a trusted adult.
Only visit approved, safe websites.
