Lesson 9: Grammar: Alphabetical Order
Key Concepts
Alphabetical order means arranging words based on the order of letters in the alphabet:
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
Rules for Alphabetical Order
When All Words Have Different First Letters
Compare the first letter of each word.
Arrange the words according to their order in the alphabet.
Example
Words: bird, dog, cat, ape
First letters: b, d, c, a
Alphabetical order: ape, bird, cat, dog
When Words Have the Same First Letter
Arrange based on the second letter’s order in the alphabet.
Look at the second letter of the words.
Example
Words: dog, drip, dig
First letters are the same ("d"), so compare the second letters: o, r, i.
Alphabetical order: dig, dog, drip
If Two Words Have the Same First and Second Letters
Continue comparing letters until you find a difference.
Always start with the first letter and move to the next letter only if needed. Repeat this process until all words are correctly ordered.
