There are many times where Nakata talks to cats. Each is distinct from the other just like people and help him on his journey by giving him tips on the missing cat.

Janina attempt to control her life by using nature to predict what might happen. This leads into her using animals as a way to not only get away with her crimes (for a time) but she thinks of herself as a vessel for natures justice on those who wrong it.

Lives are pre-determined
While some see a pre-determined future as a bad thing after reading these books I can see how it would be a calming thought. While things in our lives may already be determined the way we reach those moments and what we do after them is left fully up to us so it becomes more about the journey to these preset moments in life rather than the destination

Time
One theme throughout all these works i noticed was that of time passing. We never have a proactive main character in all these stories they seem to be stuck in slow motion, unable to move past what has happened in her lives and it isn't until they confront these feelings and/or experiences that they are able to move forward and control and enjoy their lives

Janina believes that nature can be predicted and that things are pre determined we just have to look for the signs
She studies the stars to determine not only what events could transpire form day to day but to "look into the future" and even determine how one may die

Because she is written off as a crazy old women not only is she taken unserious by those with power but is even the victim of poaching by those very same people as no one will look into her claims

Kafka on the Shore
Kafka has had his life plan forced upon him by his father stating that he will sleep with his mother and sister, then he will kill his father
While we do not know for sure if he slept with his actual mother he does dream that Sakura is his sister which technically makes the future his father predicted pass

Upon completing the prophecy his dad set Kafka is now free to live life his own way and not be guided what others conceptions of him are.

The Komura Memorial Library is a place where time has stopped and allows those who have been wronged to find peace
Not only is Miss Saeki stuck in a period of grieving but Oshima is looked down upon for being a transman
