Lesson 2: Spelling with Short Vowels
The Vowels
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u
Vowels are like a special key in a word that "opens" it.
Consonants work as a "fence" to hold vowels in place (e.g., in the word "mat").
Short Vowel Sounds
Each vowel makes many different sounds, one of which is the short sound.
The short vowel sound is marked with a breve (˘) over the vowel.
Consonant-vowel-consonant (C-V-C) pattern is a specific word pattern where the consonants hold in the vowels, like a "sandwich."
