Anatomy of the Long Bone
Epiphysis: Expanded ends of long bone, contains red bone marrow (for blood cell production)
Diaphysis: Shaft of the bone, contains medullary (marrow) cavity filled with yellow marrow (fat storage)
Metaphysis: Region where diaphysis and epiphysis meet, contains growth plate (epiphyseal plate)
Medullary Cavity: Hollow space in diaphysis, contains yellow marrow
Periosteum: Tough outer layer covering bone, site of tendon and ligament attachment
Endosteum: Inner membrane lining medullary cavity, contains bone cells for growth and repair
Articular Cartilage: Smooth layer covering joint surfaces, reduces friction
Bone Fracture Repair
Hematoma Formation: Blood clot forms at fracture site, swelling and pain occur
Fibrocartilaginous Callus Formation: Fibroblasts and chondroblasts form a soft callus, providing a temporary bridge
-
Bone Remodeling: Osteoclasts shape and smooth the repaired bone, restoring normal structure

-
-
Greenstick: Incomplete fracture, common in children

Bone Remodeling
-

-
Osteocytes: Mature bone cells, maintain bone structure
-
-
Resorption: Osteoclasts dissolve minerals, releasing calcium into blood
-
Formation: Osteoblasts deposit new bone, forming fresh osteons
-
-
Calcitonin: Inhibits osteoclast activity, promotes calcium storage in bones
