The author contemplates whether being physically different and noticeable makes one a freak. Moral questioning of the different treatment that Lehrer faced.

As time passed, the older daughter realized that beauty can not excuse her from the consequences of being dumb. Riquet proposes a deal to the beautiful princess: he will grant her intelligence in exchange for marriage in a year. In a year, the princess changes her mind as she doesn’t want to marry someone that she doesn’t love. She is also unimpressed by his appearance.
    - - Often overlooked, with beauty comes with hardships due to others' envy. In the tale of the Fairies, the youngest daughter is mistreated by her naughty sister and stepmother who lack the level of her beauty and kindness.
  - - - Regardless of Mary's blindness, Tom falls in love with her entirely. After getting to know her and spending time with her, he makes the great sacrifice of giving up his own eyes for Mary to finally fulfill her desperate wish to see the world. Mary went through a physical metamorphosis, as she was no longer visually impaired. Tom, on the other hand, went through both a physical and enotional metamorphosis: he experienced the great strength of love that motivated him to transform his whole life. Shockingly, the two don't end up together. This raises a question: is love's ability to transform us stronger than its inconsistency and fragility?

At first, she is horrified by the serpent, showing she has not learned to not to judge others by their appearances. Later, regardless of the "ugly" appeaances, they form a connection.
    - - Riquet convinces the princess that her love can make him handsome. When the princess declares that she loves him and wishes he becomes handsome to the fairies, he transforms in her eyes.
    - - The superiority of relationships founded on virtue, than shallow beauty. In Beauty and the Beast, beauty chooses to value virtue rather than wit or physical appearance. Without knowing that the beast with the fearful appearance is a prince under a curse, beauty treats beast humanly and with love by the end of the tale. Her thoughtfulness and love break the spell that locked the prince in a beast's body, emphasizing that love can heal and change one another for the better.
- - - - Abandoned and agonized by her stepsisters and stepmother's efforts to discourage her, Ashkins must find her own way of life. With the help of birds and godmothers, Ashkins wins the permission to attend the ball where she is noticed by the prince for her beauty. Regardless of Ashkins' perseverance and inner strength, there is emphasis on beauty and outward appearance as it is what changes her life, allowing her to marry a prince.
    - - Abandonment of parental responsibility and dignity. In Donkey Skin, a widowed king tries to marry his own daughter, but she avoids this by receiving the skin of a donkey from her fairy godmother and disguises herself. Successfully escaped and living in a far kingdom, she marries a prince who falls in love with her beauty, becoming "independent" by freeing herself from her father's presence. The king is forgiven for his action and is not punished for the shocking wrongdoings; the seriousness of incest is undermined.
    - - A recognition of toxic masculinity and predatory men. The tale reveals the prevalence of violence girls and women commonly faced long before gender equality was established. In Perrault's version, Little Red Tippet does not make it to grandmother safely and is eaten by the wolf, reflecting what can happen to young girls who are "abandoned," not protected by a trustworthy figure. A cautionary tale that warns young girls of men with ulterior intentions.
      - "When a girl lost her virginity it was said that elle avoit vû le loup — she'd seen the wolf" The phrase was used to indicate loss of innocence; this reveals the traditional societal expectations of women to remain pure and submissive.

The cat is the transformation agent that gives him a name, a body, a land, and an alliance: allowing him to achieve social transcend.
- - - - Are cleverness and deception inherently connected? From tricking innocent villagers, faking identity, and resorting to violence: the Master Cat’s methods aren't exactly ethical. Is it right to do whatever it takes to achieve our goals?
    - - We live in a world today where technology has enabled us to make modifications to our genetics, transforming our bodies. While the technology has positive implications that can ease the difficulties faced by people due to diability, there are moral questions. Does human enhancement contribute to ableism? What about the people who cannot afford the technology?
    - - Why does our society make it so difficult for those with physical disabilities to flourish? Is it natural or immoral to judge others by their appearance?
    - - Was Mary wrong for breaking up with Tom despite all of his sacrifices and expression of genuine love? Should she have stayed with Tom and choose loyalty over her desire to explore new connections?
    - - An old fairy, angry that the king and queen forgot to prepare a solid gold box for her, but gave it to seven other younger fairies, places a curse on the new princess. The curse will puncture her hand when she touches a spindle and she will die. However, a young fairy alters the curse to protect the new princess, putting her to 100 years of sleep instead of death. The tale shows that power can be abused when given to someone with the wrong intention, but it can also be used for good.
    - - Similar to the moral questioning of Fixed: Science of Human Enhancement, the text raises ethical concerns of perpetuating negative perspectives on deformities. Does such text aggravate the stigmatization of being different physically?
  - - - A tale that shows the power of the method of showing not telling. The result for the little thumblette was not only proving capability, but saving his family. Intelligence can triumph obstacles presented by others due to assumption based on physical appearance.
    - - Although she had to give up her beautiful appearance and and wear Donkey Skin, she was able to survive through the method of looking "ugly" and disguising herself. The happy ending of marriage and going back to her true appearance shows that cleverness and perseverance can triumph the consequences of the ugly, in this case, her father's ill intents.
- - - - The wife advises that her husband waits until the next day to make his wishes granted by Jupiter. However, he doesn’t listen to her and impulsively wishes for sausages. Angered when confronted for his break of promise, he uses his second wish to attach the sausage to his wife’s nose. Then, he uses the last wish to remove it from her nose as he feels that his wife’s ugliness tarnishes his reputation. He is left with nothing, returning to the same status before the wishes were granted. The punishment for his foolishness, impatience, and lack of carefulness is the missed opportunity for abundance and social transcend that can never be recovered.
    - - The tale of Bluebeard underscores karma as Bluebeard he meets a violent death for his evil. His life of deceit and serial murder of his ex-wives is faced with justice when when the young wife’s brothers arrive to rescue her. Bluebeard is one of the tales that follow the saying: "You Reap What You Sow." However, can punishment restore the balance when the damage has already been done?
    - - The tale that emphasizes the importance of having good intentions and dangers of greed. "The
        neighbor set out on purpose to do her own good deed." When discovered the old lady's pumpkin's ability to magically produce abundance of food, the greedy neighbor tries to take advantage of the pumpkin. However, she is attacked by "a hellish mob of snakes, spiders, skinks, and fat brown mabouyas" for having too much envy and scheming against the sweet old lady. The bad karma shocked her, prompting her to disappear into the sea.
    - - The evil stepsisters are violently punished at the end by the birds that help Cinderella. Cinderella gets the good karma for her virtues of kindness, patience, and hard work, while the stepsisters get the bad karma for their virtues of greed, materialism, and ill-intent.
    - - The envious sister, on the other hand, shows rudeness to the disguised fairy and is punished by the curse of having snakes and toads come out of her mouth. She dies alone and lonely,

Despite being explicitly warned not to open the forbidden room, her curiosity and temptation to discover her husband's secret overpowers thier promise. Temptation is often portrayed as a negative attribute, however, in this tale, temptation is what saves her life as she finds out that Blue Beard is a serial killer.
  - - - After facing multiple ordeals and having truly learnt the lesson, Laidronette is rewarded when the prince is freed from the curse and she is made beautiful again. Her loyalty and patience is rewarded, encouraging readers to embody such qualities.
    - - The younger daughter mistreated by her mother and sister, having to do all house chores, helps a fairy disguised as a needy woman. She is rewarded for her kindness by an ability to make pearls, diamonds, and flowers whenever she speaks.
