"Hypersexual representations of Asian women actually express various experiences of trauma, terror, and pain as well as joy, self- recognition, and alliance for those who produce, consume, and criticize these images." (Shimizu 23). I think that this is a very fair generalization of depictions of Asian Femininity in early films like Daughter of the Dragon, World of Suzie Wong, and Toll of the Sea. These depictions really highlight Asian female characters as objects or caricatures/tropes of which the White characters can interact with, not characters with their own agency and goals. It does seem that these characters are the product of sexual fantasy, specifically the white male's sexual fantasy, which is why there are even less male Asian characters in these films and they all serve some very background role like Ah Kee.
