The thought went that as as technilogicaly and educationally, western nations like britian and America had gained suprior positions in the global order - therefore a desire to combine western innovations such as sketching, oil painting, western education, etc, with chinese traditions rooted in Daoism, and master-student educational relationships. By creating a strong artistic culture, they felt they could gain a strong national culture, resulting in a style called GUO HUA - embracing sketching from life, a more liberal applicaiton of ink and wash, yet many felt this style did not go far enough and still limited the expression of artists.
